2.0 TUTORIAL

WEEK 1: Folder System & E-Portfolio

For the first Tutorial class, Sir Fauzi made sure all students have joined Google Classroom and MS Teams where all announcements and assignments will be posted. He also assisted us on logging in to Creative Cloud for access to the Adobe softwares. Next, he briefed us on our first task, which is making a traditional collage. We were instructed to bring materials such as old magazines/ printed pictures/ coloured paper/ stationeries etc for next week. Through this task, students are expected to learn and understand the basics of composition, which is the placement and arrangement of different elements within a specific space.

- Favourite Graphic Design Work

Figure 3.0 Art by DoomsdayLLC, Pinterest (Week 1, 22/4/2025)

This poster was designed by DoomsdayLLC. The poster is minimalistic and clean. It uses overlapping transparent geometric shapes to create depth and form, representing a pancake in an abstract manner. The warm monochromatic colour scheme and geometric representation of pancakes shows how abstraction can effectively communicate a concept. The design has a retro-futuristic aesthetic that combines minimalism with a commercial/product advertising style. The typography uses a bold, sans-serif typeface and it is neatly aligned and spaced, using grids to separate the text sections.

This is a poster made by Amnesty International Hong Kong in 2017. It depicts a page from Hong Kong's Basic Law with strips cut away to reveal faces of protestors behind the text. The visual metaphor suggests that the very laws meant to protect citizens' freedoms are being eroded, with the human cost visible through the gaps. The design creates an impression of imprisonment or censorship while using the legal document itself as both medium and message. With the tagline "EVERY FREEDOM NEEDS A FIGHTER" and the Amnesty International logo at the bottom, the poster effectively communicates concerns about diminishing civil liberties in Hong Kong through sophisticated artistic technique rather than obvious political imagery.

Figure 3.2 Art by Blockvoid, Pinterest (2024) (Week 1, 22/4/2025)

This poster by Blockvoid uses a striking minimalist approach with a vibrant dark red background contrasted against bold black typography. The tagline is strategically placed across the composition with numbered sequencing, creating visual movement that mirrors the message of action over contemplation. The designer incorporates a grid system with horizontal lines that both organise and disrupt the text layout, while the silhouette of a walking figure sets the conceptual message in human experience. The art shifts from passive observation to active interaction with simple instructions — "put your name before the word 'want'".  The overall artistic direction is using controlled chaos to visually represent the mental struggle between overthinking and taking action.

4.0 REFLECTION

As this is the first class for this subject, we just started off with a simple exercise. It was interesting to get to know what kind of art styles I lean more towards to, which is helpful when trying to find inspirations for upcoming tasks.
