2.2 3-Act Structure - Lalin & Everything, Everywhere, All At Once
1. Lalin
Act 1: The film opens with the introduction of Lalin, a girl who hides her real face behind a mask. She moves to Japan to escape past bullying, and becomes a net idol, editing and filtering her images to appear flawless. This sets up her double life and the conflict between appearance and reality.
Act 2: Lalin starts talking to a guy called Nut, online and their relationship slowly grows. Even though she feels happy, she’s constantly anxious that he’ll find out what she really looks like. This act shows her emotional conflict between wanting to connect and being afraid of being seen for who she truly is.
Act 3: Nut comes to Japan to meet her, but she hesitates to show herself. She ultimately must decide whether to reveal her face. The emotional climax resolves her inner conflict, forcing a moment of truth and acceptance.
Inciting Incident: The moment Lalin begins messaging Nut on social media. Up until that point, her life was largely hidden. The external connection forces her to consider exposing her real self.
Midpoint Scene: When Lalin is pressured or asked to meet the guy face-to-face. That moment feels like a turning point because her online fantasy suddenly collides with reality. It’s no longer just about curating image, but revealing truth.
Climax Scene: The climax happens when Nut actually comes to see her, and Lalin must expose her real face in front of him. It's the moment of maximum emotional tension and risk.
Theme: The theme is about self-acceptance and the pressure to live up to societal beauty standards.
2. Everything, Everywhere, All At Once
Act 1: The story begins with Evelyn Wang, an exhausted laundromat owner juggling taxes, family problems, and a crumbling marriage. Her routine life flips upside down when an alternate version of her husband appears, revealing that she’s part of a multiverse. This sets up her chaotic world and the beginning of her journey toward self-discovery.
Act 2: Evelyn starts exploring countless versions of herself, each representing the life she could’ve lived. As she gains power, she also becomes emotionally lost, realizing the conflict with her daughter Joy mirrors the multiverse chaos around her. It’s a struggle between control and understanding, illusion and truth.
Act 3: In the end, Evelyn stops fighting and embraces every version of herself. She reaches out to Joy with compassion, choosing love and acceptance over anger. The chaos settles not through victory, but through connection.
Inciting Incident: When Alpha Waymond contacts Evelyn at the IRS office, introducing her to the multiverse and pulling her into a new reality.
Midpoint Scene: When Evelyn fully taps into her multiverse powers, shifting from confusion to taking control and deciding to confront Jobu Tupaki.
Climax Scene: The emotional climax happens when Evelyn finally reaches Joy and chooses empathy instead of conflict, healing their broken relationship.
Theme: It is about acceptance, love, and finding peace in imperfection; learning that even in chaos, kindness is what holds everything together.
