1.0 INSTRUCTIONS

2.0 PROJECT 1A: AUDIO DUBBING

For Project 1A, we were provided with a short clip of Everything, Everywhere, All At Once along with subtitles scripts. From the clip, we were instructed to create an audio breakdown sheet with the links to the sound effects and ambience sound according to the timeline.

Audio Breakdown

We were formed into a group of 3 to complete the sheet together, and I took part in breaking down the sound effects and ambience sound. After filling in the scene information, we added the links to the sound effects and ambience sound according to the description individually.

To gather the sound effects and ambience sounds, I used these two websites:

SFX Editing

After completing the audio breakdown sheet, I edited and synced the SFX audio files first on Adobe Premiere Pro. I used a total of 5 tracks for the SFX audios as there were too many overlapping sound effects and ambience sounds.

All sound effects have its custom volume setting, while ambience sounds are kept generally in between -15.0dB ~ -30.0dB.

Dubbing Process

Below are all of my recorded dubbing files attempts:

After exporting my voice recordings, I synced the dubbed files to the clip in Adobe Premiere Pro. For dialogues, I used 2 tracks only. I tried to record my voice as the same pace as the original dialogue so I don't need to adjust the speed/ duration too much.

I added several audio effects to make all the characters' voices clearer and deeper.

1. Enhance Speech
To improve clarity of raw dialogue file.

2. Pitch Shifter
To deepen all characters' voices, semi-tones and cents vary based on characters.

3. DeNoise
To remove background noise from raw dialogue file.

4. DeReverb
To reduce echo and reverberation of edited dialogue file.

3.0 PROJECT 1B: SOUND SHAPING

For Project 1B, we were tasked to record our own voice for 5 different types of sound.

Duration: 5-7 seconds
Sounds:
  • Voice of phone call
  • Voice coming from inside of closet
  • Voice coming from toilet/bathroom
  • Underground cave
  • Alien/ Orc voice

Final Outcome of Sound Shaping

1. Voice of phone call

2. Voice coming from inside of closet

3. Voice coming from toilet/bathroom

4. Underground cave

5. Alien/ Orc voice

4.0 REFLECTION

This project was an interesting introduction to this module. It was awkward recording my voice at first for both exercises, but I got used to it as I kept recording. Through the audio dubbing task, I learnt how syncing dialogue and sound effects add emotions to visuals. I also learnt how to pay attention to smaller details, such as sounds that still exist even though the main subject is not in frame. By adding these tiny details, it made the visual and hearing experience more realistic. As for the sound shaping exercise, the alien sound effect was the most fun to do as I had more freedom to make it sound weird.
